Tempered Glass, also known as Toughened Glass, belongs to safety glass. To enhance the strength of the glass, chemical or physical methods are usually employed to form compressive stress on the surface of the glass. When the glass is subjected to external force, the stress on the surface layer is first counteracted, thereby increasing the bearing capacity and enhancing the glass's own resistance to wind pressure, temperature changes, and impact.
Physical tempered glass is made by heating the glass in a "tempering furnace" to around 680 - 750ºC and then rapidly cooling it down. This process causes the destruction of the original molecular structure of the glass, resulting in compressive stress distributed on the surface of the glass while tensile stress is located in the center layer. Due to the strong and uniform compressive stress, the tensile stress generated by external pressure is counteracted by the powerful compressive stress of the glass, thereby increasing the safety of its use. When the external force exceeds the internal closed tensile force, this tensile force will lose its balance and shatter, becoming countless fine granular and obtuse-angled tiny particles that pose no harm to the human body.
